I know, I know, but hear me out....
This weekend is the Roval, basically they built a road course into the middle the Charlotte oval.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The first practice just happened here are some highlights. To summarize for anyone that doesn’t feel like watching the video. Almost everyone hit almost everything. I can’t find a video of it but the pace car spun coming out of one of the turns.
To add to the potential for shenanigans this race is the last race of the first round of the “playoffs” there are 4 drivers that have to win to advance to the next round.
Go get some cheap ‘Murican beer and enjoy a nice quite Sunday afternoon of race cars racing badly.

I can’t wait it should be a complete disaster in a good way. I also think NASCAR
should do the Indy road course every other year. Odd years Road Course, Even Years Indy Oval. It would keep the race fresh.

As someone who grew up watching it... Nascar has gotten boring. I really only make a point of watching the road courses and Eldora.

Ya, after watching the first practice, which went exactly how I expected, I set up the DVR to record all of the practices, qualifying and the race.

I am soooo hyped for this absolute disaster!
Full disclosure: I’m flying halfway across the country tomorrow to see it in person.

I’m going. First NASCAR race I’ll be going to in at least a decade.

I didn’t watch the Indy race this year, but I remember reading comments on racer.com and people saying it was painfully boring. I am all up for Nascar racing in as many road courses as possible.

I’ve never been to a race and I am not trying to shit on your decision, I would be worried that this race could turn into a caution parade.

I replied to someone else that’s going, I would be worried if I was going that I spent money to watch a lot of caution laps.
Have fun though!!!

Fun is the game plan. There will probably be a bunch of cautions, but I’m ok with that. The last race I went to (X finity) had one debris caution, and Brad K led from beginning to end. If the Roval is that , then I’ll be upset.

Indy this year was pretty decent, but that was from all practice being canceled. And I’m never against more road courses...

I’ve never been to a road race in any racing series, and since I missed the IMSA GT race at VIR this year this is the closest thing. The unpredictability is part of what drew us to it.

Ya, I am quite sure it will be a ton of cautions, hopefully it’s not like the Xfinity race at Road America where the cautions we re stupid long.

How is this such a clusterfuck? It’s just a roadcourse with a bit of banking, why are they having such issues with it? Don’t get me wrong, its very entertaining to watch but this can’t be that hard.

This is mostly going off of what the announcers were saying during practice and qualifying earlier today:
1. Inaugural race at basically a brand new track without much testing before hand. There was a test earlier this summer but it was mostly a tire test without much data collection besides what the drivers could relay to the teams from memory.
2. There being no real runoff for a large part of the track, is making a bunch of the drivers be tentative which is throwing off their rhythm.
3. The tires are optimized for the banking, so they don’t explode on the banking, and are too hard for the road course section which is leading to traction issues.
4. There is an actual elevation change in the infield that is really messing with the cars, braking and turning while on a steep downhill makes the cars all kinds of upset. Same with the chicane on the back stretch, off the banking into a chicane while heavy on the brakes. Every driver that drove Nascar from another series has been pretty adamant that the cars don’t handle on road courses.
5. Those giant blues curbs are designed to make cutting a corner punishing and seem to be pretty good at their job.
There could be more that I forgot, that covers most of it though I think.
